afternoon and I'll welcome our today as we promised you earlier in the week we wanted to communicate with you about our plan for a reopening and restarting school I want a border she's met last night so we're certainly pleased to be able to share this information with you today and that's what we want to talk about is the reopening of school and as we've been saying we are planning on reopening School in the first day for students will be July 27th 2020 as the board looked at things last night in terms of the development of plant of the plan that we present we had taken into account considered various subjects we looked at the survey results that we received from individuals ivri website we had over 700 responses we had various Committees of teachers and staff all throughout the the division working on many different components of the plan that shared their information we looked at academic data that we had that was both predictive data looking at how children would perform in the future i-Ready diagnostic exam and at the same time we consider guidelines that have been released by The Centers for Disease Control and prevention along with the Mississippi State Department of Health we have been in consultation with our local Health Care Providers about things that they can do to assist and help us as we prepare for the reopening so consideration a plant and then presenting that plant thought it was very important that we focused on what is the mission of the current school district and the mission of our school district is ultimately to provide a 21st century educational experience or one for children that they can have the academic success that they need to be the skills that they need to be successful or when they go off to college to develop that personal and civic responsibility and so we wanted to look at how the mission of the school district what's the mission of the school district was and looking at that in terms of those things that we recognized are imported onto our district or are important considerations that we need to keep in mind as this plan was developed because as I said I think on the Spurs there are three things that we have to recognize and the first thing is is that all of our students are all of our staff have been impacted by covid-19 and at the same time after we closed school on March the even though we continue to provide educational opportunities for our children all of our teaching and learning was impacted because of the radical changes we had to make its notice in at the same time even though we were providing instruction all of our students missed that important face-to-face teaching time that is extremely important for children to learn and so in doing that we considered some guiding principles as far as the reopening plan that was approved by the board last night and the first guiding principle that was considered was what can we do to ensure the safe will be and make sure that we create healthy environment in the car at school district for our students and for our staff because that right now has to be one of the main priorities we have at the same time we have to be concerned about the education of our children here in this community and we have to be concerned about equity and accessibility to learning opportunities and this equity and accessibility to learning opportunities has to exist for all students and we believe that what's another guiding principle that we needed to consider at the same time we wanted to look at what we had in place in terms of instructional Delivery Systems curriculum that we had to and what would be the best way to continue promote the learning of that curriculum through the various instructional systems that we have in place and then at the same time one of the most important considerations that has to be taken into account are the social and emotional interactions that exist between students and teachers that is a very important and driving consideration that needed to be considered we need to look at what we can do to me does social and emotional needs of both students and employees in our district we have a lot of children that are in need of these social and emotional support school is a safe place for many of them and we have to keep in mind that in many cases they you know where in unstable home situations they could be in abusive situations and schools provide them a safe haven that is there for them as we talked about over the last several weeks and we're not going to go into great detail we talked about the fact that we had three proposed models that we would consider for reopening we had the traditional model which is a 5 day school week with instruction as most of us have been accustomed to throughout our life and throughout the life of the children that you have had in the car at school district at the same time a second model we considered was the hybrid limited model and then the third model was a hybrid Virtual Academy model that looked at a reconfiguration of our schools with different grades are two different schools and so all three of those models were considered we move through the process and I talked about what all went into place in terms of the decision-making week came up with two options that we presented to the Board of Trustees last night for their consideration and the board adopted these two proposed models for the 2020-21 school the two models that were adopted wear a traditional attendance schedule model along with a virtual model and so let's talk for a few minutes about those two models and then we'll talk about some other things as a part of the reopening plan that was adopted the traditional attendance schedule model will be the traditional 5 days off school with a full day of construction on each of those days that's the model that we are going to open school with own July 27th that's the model now while we're going to open that traditional attendance schedule we need to understand that instruction will look differently in that model and it's very important that instruction change and look differently in that model not knowing what circumstances we might face as we move through the school year so we've got to make sure and I can tell you our teachers did a great job using and try and many of the different things that they had learned about incorporating technology into lessons and into the classroom through the virtual learning experience last spring practices over the summer we will continue to provide support are to them in the district throughout the school year to help that because we want children to be familiar with their devices we want children to be familiar with the learning management system that we will have in place grades pre-k through 12 we want students to be familiar with various technology applications that they can use should we have to revert to or should we have to go to some type of different scheduled in what we have additional what we have proposed at this point so the traditional model is the model that we will open reopen school with at the end of this month however we will make a virtual model available to parents that choose to enroll in a virtual model and this virtual model will be a model that children will be enrolled in school district you will be able to receive instruction from Corinth school district teachers via on a virtual platform and you will count toward you know attendance all of those types of things as long as each day your children for for specific tasks that will be required at them when we look specifically at the virtual model we will have to make sure that we have some things in place in order to be prepared for that so if you were going to enroll your child in the virtual model your school or the central office needs to hear from you by July 17th that you wished take advantage of that opportunity where we can make preparations for you to participate in that virtual model now in terms of the virtual model there going to be some restrictions in terms of when you can enter and exit the virtual models because we're going to have to make sure that we have some type of consistency in order for that to function and that will take place at the end play nine weeks. Rather than a semester with initially talked about a semester but we have decided on the end of the nine weeks. That you can make a decision either to go into the Virtual Boy or to come out with the virtual model now when we looked at the two models we selected the traditional bottle basically because it created a story return to normalcy for students and staff I think that's something that we all realize and recognize that we are having to deal with and are going to have to learn to deal with and that is this is the new normal and this is how life is going to be for a while and we've got to begin to prepare to function in that type of environment at the same time we can provide our children with the much-needed face-to-face instruction. text support that they get at school in order to receive the instruction that they need so it's extremely important at the same time it is far easier to transition from a traditional mod to another mod should we have to do that during the school year now the virtual model is there because we recognize that many children have concerns about that either as an individual concerns or their parents and so that virtual model is there for those students to take advantage of parents maybe just not comfortable yet what's coming back to a traditional model at this time now in terms of the virtual model as I said there are certain conditions that are going to have to be met for a child to remain in the virtual for a child to be counted toward attendance in to get the grades that they need in order to meet the school district grading policy the school district promotion and retention policy we have to do in terms of the academic assessments that have to be given at the scoot at the end of the school year none of those things are going to be used as a virtual model they're the same expect actions are going to exist in the traditional model and they will have to complete an exit ticket for all subjects or assignments that teacher the children will know if you talked with them about an exit ticket or something like that probably what we're talking about and that's going to be sometime type of the song or some types of check for understanding but you have to show that they are engaged in the learning at the same time this is all going to be looked at because they will be counting towards the attendance requirements that we have to file with the state of Mississippi so if your in the virtual model and does not participate and a cruise or guess the number of absences the schedule we will turn you over to the school send its officer because that this is attendant and you will be expected to be there at the same time when students are participating in the virtual learning be in compliance with all rules and regulations the dress code student conduct policies on will apply because in many cases are in some cases they will actually be staying the classroom teacher lawn and other stuff this will be seeing them they will be able to I'm at times the other students in their classroom and so therefore they're going to have to be in compliance with those policies now we know that some students that are interest in the virtual model are also interested in participating in extracurricular and athletic activities will be able to participate in those decks with curry what are activities and athletic activities so that will be available for them and the grading policy we're pretty much to talk about what we are going to have in place for this next two-year you remember when we were in March and would move to the virtual platform we decided that a student's go what he or she had at the end of the third nine weeks and one of the things that the state is requiring us to do this year is to establish a grading policy prior to the start of school and the Board of Trustees last night approved that I'm writing policy will remain the same as it has been in the student handbook in the past this is the grading policy we will use throughout this school year even if we transition model to a hybrid modified model or to a complete virtual model the grading policy that is in place when we start school is the Great a policy that will remain in place for the end of the school year at the same time to policies for promotion and retention will also stay the same now we also have to escape college graduation requirements for this graduating class for the class of 2020 21 the state has given us the option of the same that we had last year credits to graduate from high school then the basic Mississippi requirements are we have made that the board has made the decision last night that students will be able to graduate if they meet them state requirements for graduation we wanted to do that because I'm other districts on throughout the state are adopting this and we did not want to put current high school students at a disadvantage in order to be able to graduate in May of 2021 even though we are going to allow them to graduate with a lesser requirement than we had previously requested we do have requirements in place open have to take additional mathematics and science courses and their Juniors and Senior years and those requirements in complete the work that is new in those courses in relationship to the virtual model and we need to understand at this point Mississippi has not made any decisions in terms of Y the 2020-21 school year in terms of looking at that at we need to plan at this point that all students will take the required Mississippi academic assessment assessment at the end of the school year along with the Cambridge assessments that we have traditionally administered those will be administered both in the traditional model and in the virtual model so need to make sure that everybody understands that at this point that will be extremely important for those of you that have children in the third grade at this time we have no waivers and the state has not had any discussion and the expectation will be that all third grade students will have to score at the position or advanced level on the 3rd grade Mississippi academic Assessment program reading assessment in to be promoted on to the fourth grade now let's move for a few minutes into what are we going to do as far as some things in terms of health safety and the well-being of students and staff because we believe that is extremely important as I said that is a primary consideration that we are considered there will be daily screenings off students and staff members in terms of temperature checks at all of our facilities will be screened each day we will be using thermal scanners that on students will walk through where we will able to scan temperature check as they arrived at the school building staff will also go through the screeners we right now is it taking everyone's temperature each day here at the central office and we have being on in our food services operations so that is a practice that we have become accustomed to hear and it's a practice that we're going to put in place in all of our schools verbally knowledge the basic question that are generally asked at many places of work right now in terms of have you had a fever of 100.4 brighter in the last 2 days are you having any signs of a cough difficulty in breathing sore throat a loss of taste or smell that has been infected with covid-19 where can I ask and get the I'm some type of acknowledgement from staff that is taking place at the same time we're going to ask you is parents to do the same thing for your children prior to sending them so sure that we're going to have to make sure that we do that and if you have if you have a temperature you don't need to come to school that is extremely important we also are looking at the possibility city of using thermal technology to do random checks on throughout the day to make sure that we can monitor those situations because if we do know that that happened and so as I said we will be screening everyone for a temperature check is that coming to the building in your child comes into the building and they have a temperature that's over a hundred Thor probably even if they have any type of temperature we're going to talk with you about that and we're probably going to we're going to send them and we won't show right now how many 2 hours do you need to be fever free before they return to school and they're going to need to be paid for free without taking any type of medication before returning to school if a child to school date you'll be sent home we're going to have places in each of our schools for your children become sick they will be separate from those other children that maybe might be going to visit the nurse to take medications or for a variety of recent so please keep that in mind now one of the questions that you will have is what will take place should we have a student or should we have a staff member within a classroom that I'm is identified with having the covid-19 we will be following CDC guidelines and Department of Health guidelines and working with them and in terms of what those specific guidelines are in many cases are particularly the elementary school where classes on will be really existing as a cohort and they will be remaining to have to look to see in terms of the close contact those types of thing dr. Oz is giving us some guidance but we will be looking at doing years in what way we will be making the decisions in terms of course the child will not be able to come back for a staff member but whether or not it is going to require an entire dismissal of an entire class or an inch or School we're going to have to look at what those specific circumstances are and what the specific guidelines are and the circumstances involving their and the and the CDC has provided us with a matrix right decision tree to follow in terms of making those decisions and that is what we will be following so you know we're going to look at that because as I said we're going to do everything to create that safe and for your children in terms of odd parents and visitors and volunteers volunteers will be allowed Beyond this area and any of our schools as we begin school and so we need to make sure that that is clearly understood at the same time all our parents that come into the school bus where some type of face covering when they enter any Corinth School District facility at this point and so we want to talk for a few minutes about face coverings and those types of things and how we're going to move forward with that just that all students will be required to wear a face covering when they are riding a bus while the CDC has put out guidelines regarding buses in order for for schools to safe to transport children many of those guidelines are going to be extremely difficult to adhere exactly as the CDC is put them out but we think that we can put in place some things that will help to allow us to allow that to happen but all students must wear a face covering when riding a bust teachers at the same time I need to wear face coverings and all common area with students are teachers with face coverings on and face Shields now through three will be required to wear a face covering when they are in any and all common areas the school and as they enter School each day they will not be required to wear a face covering in the classroom where we have the sufficient social and we believe in our pre-k through 3 classrooms we're going to be able to accommodate sufficient social distancing to allow them not to wear a facemask because we know that in many cases it will be difficult for the younger chill however students in grades 4 through 12 are going to be required to wear a face covering at all times unless they are in a classroom or unless they are in an activity that allows efficient search distance to take place in one of the reasons for this is students in grades seven through twelve will be changing classes that is one of the things that we heard from an teachers and parent that they wanted that normal school day if it all possible and this is something that we're going to have to put in place in order to have that normal still day as we have traditionally known and so we're going to ask for everybody's cool operation in that now we think it can work and we believe it is a good way and it can go a long way toward misenhelter mitigating the television exposure in the schools so that is something you know that we're looking at so we will be providing every with to face covering you is a parent can purchase what you just keep in mind face coverings have to be in compliance with School dress code and terms if you can't have anything offensive on it or anything like that so I'll keep that in and what we found is the dinner survey 88% of the people that responded to the survey said that it was somewhat too very important that face coverings be worn on masseuse gives me 57% I apologize I got it wrong with additional ones just going to make sure that we are working to provide all of the appropriate CDC approved sanitation in terms of cleaning procedures and practices in place we want to make sure that we a place in our classroom we have purchased on and will be purchasing additional materials and supplies as we move through the school year to make sure that we have there will be hand sanitizing station at each of the entrances to our schools and to our facility there will be hand sanitizer in each of the six in all of the Elementary classrooms where we have are the Saints in each of those classrooms we will have all of those sufficient supplies teachers will have with them or teachers will have in the classrooms are custodial Crews will have types of sanitizing spray that can be used to disinfect gas shares all of those types of things we have an in-flight what we are going to be used as we began the school year because we have begun to make sure that we have all of this in place and that we have it in the sufficient quantities that we need because each and every one of us know that is we've gone through this week the situation where personally we have not been able to buy what we would like or what we would need at that point we're going to encourage frequent hand-washing and the use of hand sanitizer through a thousand the district will be partnering with Magnolia Regional Health Center in terms of developing educational videos on educational materials that we will be using and that you can also use that's your arm home in addition to that we are meeting regularly with Magnolia Regional Health on staff in order to be aware and be on the same page in terms of what is going on at Community transmission and what is going on in terms of those efforts as to what the school and Magnolia can do to promote estate community community will give us safe school and that's what we need to keep in my in terms of food service breakfast will be served as grabbing grow as we begin the school year so children will get their breakfast when they are arriving at school they will eat their breakfast in the classroom start lunch being served in the classroom and we will then work throughout the school year to begin to transition back into normal cafeteria Service as they allow us to do so important things to children for tickly in pre-k through 6 is that we want to make sure that children have access to recess and physical education do everything we can to make sure that we provide these opportunities for those student and sew in grades pre-k through 6 they will have recess we will be going outside we will be allowed free plate we will do that in the available Green Space that we have on our two campuses we're not going to initially used playground equipment because that would restrict the number of children that could onto the campus off for recess because we would have to sanitize it in between each of the groups of students using it we're also going to do physical education activities outside as the weather and we believed that you know if there are opportunities for teachers to have their class outside we're going to encourage them to have class outside the hospital didn't have done that in the past something that will be encouraged and it's something that will be allowable because those Outdoor Learning opportunities being able to breathe the air outside certainly helps each and every one of us we will make sure that where we can leave when does open to increase ventilation on in the classroom that we will be doing that also at the same time or one of the things we also need to consider deals with transportation and as I said we will be transporting students and when we are transporting students as the weather permits all of the windows will be down on the bus to increase ventilation the vents that we have at the top will be open so we can keep as much are flowing throughout that bus as it is Moody children that ride the bus will have a sign and it's going to be very important we have assigned seats and that the children sit in the seats that they respond so if we need to do contact Tracy a child was on that bus so we on the bus for that purpose and we will be having children that have brothers or sisters or children that live in the same house so they will be sitting on the same seats or they will be sitting on a very seats that are very close together so we can keep those great we're also exploring how we can modify some start and end times of the school day Boston brief. and that's something you'll be able to let you know in the next few days at the same time field trips and assemblies we want to go ahead and address that there will be no field trip schedule at this time leaving during the fall semester to go on any type of field trip at this point at the same time there will be no indoor assemblies bothering at this point those are not allowed and we will be a hearing on to those guidelines we will look at what we can do concerning the guidelines that are in place at that time in order the house out Christian beliefs are pep rally if it all possible but we will have to keep that in mind at the same time one of the very important aspects off school and grade 7 through 12 deals with Athletics and extracurricular activities and we won't to talk about the Athletics on an extracurricular activities for just a few minutes if you've seen over the last 24 hours Universal ologist are beginning to make decisions as far as what they're going to do with football and Athletics for this fall and extracurricular activities in Mississippi are governed by Mississippi High School Activities Association and they will establish the guidelines that we as a school district will follow if there are things that we think might be a safety concern that of course we will make a decision School District as to whether or not we continue or choose to participate in that activity but they will be the ones that will establish schedules and those types of things CBD is going to be next Tuesday and I will be making we think on that day decisions that will involve the extracurricular activities for the 2020-21 school year so we are going to be at that point Tuesday hopefully we will be able to provide you with that information at the same time the Mississippi bandmasters Association has made recommendations to the Activities Association band activities and I have recommended that all state sanction marching evaluations and competition that are generally held in October of each year that they be canceled for children learning to take this time to become some cases with the instrument that they learn to play water practice learning German in concentrating own learning the music on that I need to do in order to learn to play that instrument now mr. Ratliff our band director has put together a plan and we will begin some section band practices next week and we will be looking at how we can now saying throughout our traditional schedule and we think that he has come up with a plan that will be in place that we and in order to have that so we are working diligently to get where we need to be on to open school on the 27th of July questions that have been posed here today I might take just a couple of minutes if they can share with me all those questions that we had one of the questions have been asked him virtual model is the virtual model going to be something that's going to occur during the school day or at other times there will be a mixture what is I think it's going to be extremely important that on children do plan if you're on the virtual models you do need and virtual activities during the school because there will be some actual lot along with recorded videos that your children will have access to and we want you to know that you know so you know if the vertical model will not be some virtual model if they are not going to be able to participate because this is going to be different than what we saw and used this last spring this is going to be a much more organized and systematic virtual approach to teaching and learning so I think that those are the words that are key that you need to understand another thing that has been brought up is on that I didn't mention and I appreciate someone bringing up this to our attention and that involved the wearing of face covering two special considerations for students on we realize and recognize that there are students that have health concern is our health issues or needs that do not allow them to wear a mask and we will take into account and I will assure you to keep those consideration and we will do what we need to do to make your child feel comfortable your child to feel safe at school and also to make sure that everybody is safe in the room but we we fully recognize and understand that those special considerations to be in twice and turns up school supplies materials does types of things that we normally have provided we will continue to provide school supplies this year at the same time in terms of providing those school supplies we are going to provide students with those school supplies again for your children are going to be using manipulatives or all of those if the individual children don't have their own they will be cleaned or they will be sanitized between use and that is something that are Pre-K and kindergarten teachers and I lie teacher have been working out because we know that in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten there's a lot of juice with manipulatives there's some things that we will be able to use there's some things that we won't be able to use but I can tell those teachers at work and they have developed plan that I think we'll make it work I forced to have that traditional schedule and I guess that's what I would say cards teachers have always risen to the occasion and call teachers have to make sure and day of work throughout this time off in the last 4 weeks and they also work at the same time they were providing instruction in the spring they were meeting after hours they were working playing as we knew we were going to be facing a different situation when school start at 7 and staff to put us today in order to be able to open school on the 27th we think we're going to have a great school year we're excited about starting school we hope that you and your children will be excited to returning to school and us reopening school and I'm looking and moving forward to Children Learning Annex telling during the 2020-21 school year we appreciate everything you do we appreciate your all of this information is contained in a PowerPoint that we have gone over we will be posting that PowerPoint shortly on social media on the school district website where you will have a access to it we will begin to provide you with more specific details on the live at 5 on Tuesday as we move forward and as we get closer to the start of school so again thank you for your patience you for your understanding and all of your input as we have gotten to where we are today so thank you very much and have a great weekend
