April 5 STEM Saturday Recap
On April 5, the Corinth School District hosted “Spring into STEM” Saturday camp. Over 115 students registered to attend the Saturday camp that helps students learn how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) connects to the world around us through fun, hands-on experiments and activities.
Pre-K students painted colorful wooden flower ornaments and created bright, spinning mini-star pinwheels. Kindergarten students learned about the fascinating life cycle of a butterfly through interactive and hands-on activities. First graders created whimsical wind chimes and decorative flower pots bursting with spring colors. Students in second grade made popsicle stick bird feeders, completed a challenging egg-stacking competition, and conducted a fun, float-or-sink science experiment to test whether Easter bunny Peeps could float in their hand-crafted, mini sailboats.
Third grade students crafted creative newspaper kites and built an intricate egg toothpick tower, while also painting vibrant Easter eggs. Fourth grade students learned how to build sturdy and festive Easter baskets. “My students made Easter baskets out of straws, pipe cleaners and other materials,” said Kim Jones, STEM Saturday teacher. “This activity is engaging and challenging. The skills developed through STEM, such as analytical thinking, logical reasoning and problem solving, are transferable across all activities. These skills enhance decision making, creativity and a systematic approach to challenges.”
Students in fifth and sixth grade constructed geometric 3D cubes to create giant, shimmering bubbles. Pre-K through 2nd grade students also participated in spring-themed Makerspace projects, making beautiful butterflies from coffee filters and paint. Third through 6th grade students designed radiant suncatchers using construction and wax paper to reflect light in colorful patterns.
All students learned how to sew using adorable wool felt critter kits. “I helped out on STEM Saturday and I thought that it was such a fun environment,” said Emily Frame, seventh grader at Corinth Middle School. “The students learn how to sew and they were all so proud of what they created. They had an amazing time. It was so much fun helping out!”
Additionally, all STEM Saturday students participated in a Robotics and Engineering center. Students maneuvered Sphero BOLT robots using iPads and specialized apps that allow the robot to be controlled through block or text-based programming.
