Corinth Students and Families Celebrate STEM Saturday with a Mother’s Day Twist

On Saturday, May 9, the Corinth School District hosted a special Mother’s Day-themed STEM Saturday. This family engagement event invited students and their families to participate in hands-on activities designed to spark creativity and imagination. 

Our PreK through second grade students enjoyed crafting a Mother’s Day bouquet with watercolor coffee filters and pipe cleaners. “My favorite part about family STEM Saturday was getting to spend quality time with our kids while seeing them learn in such a fun way,” said Caitlin Yeates, mom of two STEM Saturday students. “They were so excited about building the robots and testing the motors and wheels, and it was really fun watching them figure things out together. The Mother’s Day bouquet craft was also a really sweet activity that we got to do together!”

Students also used a Makerspace cart—stocked with aluminum cans, circuits, motors, wheels, yarn, googly eyes, water bottles, balloons, tape and cardboard—to build unique creations. “My kids enjoy STEM Saturday because the activities are interactive and keep them engaged from start to finish,” said Yeates. “They love being able to create, build, and experiment instead of just reading about it. It gives them a chance to be creative and hands-on while learning at the same time.” 

Our third through six grade students created colorful and unique geo-flower art on a Styrofoam board using screws to set the design and rubber bands to complete the look. Additionally, they explored the world of electronics by learning about circuitry while creating pipe cleaner flower artwork.

All students had the opportunity to show their families how to skillfully maneuver Dash and Dot robots using iPads. Through specialized apps, the students demonstrated both block and text-based programming. “Our favorite part was being able to share all the activities with our daughter,” said Gloria Rodriguez, mom of a STEM Saturday student. “Most of all, I loved seeing my daughter enjoy each one of the activities, especially driving the robot and creatively building her own little car using the materials available to her.”

The STEM Saturday family event is an annual tradition that allows parents to experience the curriculum alongside their children. “We enjoyed being a part of STEM Saturday so much!” said Yeates. “I love that we were able to experience it with them rather than just hearing about it once they got home. It was great seeing firsthand how much thought and teamwork goes into the projects. You can tell the program does a wonderful job making learning fun and encouraging kids to think outside the box.”

Ultimately, the event served as an opportunity for parents to gain new insights into their children's interests. “We had a blast sharing the morning with her,” said Rodriguez. “We learned that she truly likes technology. She's always curious and eager to learn. She was so excited to have us and to be able to show us what she normally does on STEM Saturdays.

STEM Saturdays will continue in the 2026-27 school year.
