Last year, the varsity boys basketball team finished the season as the Division 1-4A runner-up with an overall record of 17-13. The Warriors lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs at Indianola Gentry (64-54). The team will need to replace three starters in order to build on last year’s success.
The varsity team has seven seniors that will provide leadership. Broderick Alexander, Chris Rodgers, and Jaylon Stackins played significant minutes last season. In addition, the Warriors have added seniors Devon Jones, Jeremiah Baker, and Andrew Steward to this year’s lineup. Lastly, Daniel Betancourt is a senior manager who returns to film and provide our gameday graphics.
“Last year was definitely a year of transition and we improved as the season went on,” said Head Coach Adam Kirk. “With several guys returning, we hope a year of familiarity with our expectations and playing style will pay dividends.”
The Warriors will return juniors Kylon Fields and Taivian Selmon along with sophomores Cayden Harris, Griffin Enis, and Roman Patterson who all played some varsity minutes last season. However, with 12 members currently playing football, we will have to gel quickly to find any early success.
Paul Timbes, DJ Woods, Brad Heavens, Tylan Mayes, Preston Crump, Patrick Crump, Braedyn Burress, Xae Mayes, Xavier Young, Jabarrian Wooden, and Frank Barber round out the 2022-23 Warriors team.
Coach Kirk, Coach Hunter Brown and Coach Clark Whitten look for the most competitive athletes for playing time. “This summer showed that we can be a greatly improved defensive team this upcoming season. We have several competitive, tough kids who play with a lot of effort. As coaches, that’s all we ask of them . . . compete and play with relentless effort!!” said Coach Kirk.
