The Corinth High School dance team was created in 2011. Abby Smith, current coach of dance team, was fortunate enough to be one of its first members. “Being a part of a school dance team was a dream come true for me,” said Coach Smith. “The dance team prided itself on being a versatile group of dancers who were able to perform various styles such as jazz, lyrical, pom, contemporary, and hip hop.”
Mrs. Volante Hill coached the team for ten years. Smith became the dance coach in 2021. The program has grown in the last two years. They participated in a regional competition in Brandon last year.
This year, the dancers will focus on mostly game day or sideline performances and hip hop dances because these are the categories that they will perform at the state championship.
They have also increased their social media presence, gotten new uniforms, participated in volunteer activities, and even held the dance team’s first-ever fundraisers.
This year, the team has seven seniors: Andrea Vargas, Angelia Brown, Ayanna Esters, Takhia Crump, Alexandria Williams, Aleasha Harris and Icsis Harris.
“Coaching has provided me with incredible growth opportunities, and my girls have inspired me more than they will ever know,” said Smith. “I want little girls throughout our school district to look up to the dance team and dream of being a part of it one day.”
